Directed Study Proposal INTAKE Form
Who should fill this INTAKE form out and why?
In order for a student to apply for a Directed Study, they must first fill out this "Directed Student INTAKE form."
NOTE: Although someone appropriately postitioned to fill out this form on behalf of the student may do so, the student who wants to propose a Directed Study for themselves is the intended/preferred filler.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE PROPOSING (APPLYING FOR) A DIRECTED STUDY, i.e. before filling out this INTAKE form:
In order to fill out this form, you must qualify for a Directed Study.
To qualfy for a Directed study, ALL of the statements below must be TRUE:
1) The course you’re requesting for a Directed Study is a graduation requirement.
2) The course you’re requesting for a Directed Study is NOT available at another time in the school year (EXCEPTION: you’re in your final two semesters at MIU and two required courses occur at the same time).
3) You have found a directed study teacher that has committed to meeting with you for AT LEAST THREE TIMES PER WEEK FOR AN HOUR EACH TIME to review progress and provide feedback (Keep in mind, Directed Studies are NOT independent studies).
4) Your directed study teacher is NOT teaching a day program course during the same block(s) as your proposed directed study.
5) (IF your proposed directed study course teacher’s discipline is NOT the subject of your proposed directed study course) The teacher IS competent to teach it and HAS secured written approval from the chair of the department that normally offers the course.
6) You have NOT skipped an opportunity to take the course on which your Directed Study is based.
7) If approved for this Directed Study, you will have taken no more than 8 total credits of Directed Studies and 16 total credits of Internships + Directed Studies upon its completion.
8) You are neither on Academic Warning nor have Probation status (EXCEPTION: You need/require the directed study in order to graduate this term) (Please refer to the MIU Catalog's "Monitoring Student Progress" section for more details on Academic Warning status).
***If you feel a Directed Study is academically necessary but one or more of the statements above are FALSE, you may still request the Directed Study via petition to The Academic Standards Committee (ASC). Please understand there is no guarantee whatsoever the ASC will approve it. On the contrary, the burden of proof is on the student to demonstrate the necessity of the Directed Study despite
***If you fill out this "Directed Study Proposal INTAKE Form", please make sure you do so AT LEAST 5 weeks prior to start date of your proposed Directed Study because the SUBMISSION DEADLINE for the COMPLETED (filled and signed by all affected parties) "Directed Study Proposal Form" itself is 4 weeks prior to the start date of your proposed Directed Study. In other words, giving AT LEAST A FULL WEEK (although as much time as possible is recommended) for all fillers/signers to complete their roles on your Directed Study Proposal Form gives you a reasonable chance of getting it completed by the submission deadline 4 weeks prior to the proposed start date)
PLEASE NOTE: Directed Studies are allowed on the Fairfield campus ONLY.
After submission of this "Directed Study Proposal INTAKE form," all affected parties will be emailed the official "Directed Study Propoal Form" by the Registrar's office. Each party will be asked to fill in certain form fields and/or submit their e-signatures. When all form information and e-signatures have been collected, each party will be emailed a fully signed and completed copy of the "Directed Study Proposal Form" for their information and records.
Finally, the Registrar's office will notify (email) all affected parties as to whether the Directed Study Proposal has been APPROVED, APPROVED WITH CONDITIONS/MODIFICATIONS, or DENIED.
