Travel Information for MIU International Students

International Students Travel Information

If you are planning to travel internationally while on an F-1 visa, it’s important to follow the correct procedures to avoid complications when returning to the U.S.

Contact Our Office Before You Travel

Before you leave the U.S., please contact the International Student Services Office to:

Request a travel signature on page 2 of your Form I-20.

  • Travel signatures are valid for 12 months (or 6 months if you’re on OPT).
  • We recommend requesting your travel signature at least 1–2 weeks before departure.

Verify your visa status and expiration date.

  • If your F-1 visa has expired, you will need to renew it at a U.S. consulate or embassy abroad before you can re-enter the U.S.

Discuss any visa concerns or reentry risks, especially if you have a pending change of status, OPT, or STEM OPT application.

Documents You Must Carry When Reentering the U.S.:

  • Valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date)
  • Valid F-1 visa (unless you’re a Canadian citizen)
  • Form I-20 with a recent travel signature
  • Proof of enrollment or class schedule (you can request this from the Registrar)
  • Financial documentation (bank statements or sponsor letter)
  • EAD card and job offer letter (if on OPT or STEM OPT)

Important Reminders

  • Always keep original documents with you in your carry-on luggage.
  • If your visa is expired and you plan to renew it, speak with our office before booking your trip.
  • Students on OPT or STEM OPT must carry additional documents related to employment.
