Grace Periods and Program Extentions
Grace Periods for F-1 Students
F-1 students are allowed a 60-day grace period after completing their academic program. During this time, you may:
- Prepare to leave the U.S.
- Apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT)
- Transfer to another SEVP-certified school
- Apply for a Change of Status (e.g., to H-1B)
Important: You cannot work during the grace period unless you have been approved for OPT. If you leave the U.S. during this period, you cannot reenter in F-1 status.
Program Extension Requests
If you are unable to complete your program by the end date on your Form I-20, you must apply for a program extension before your I-20 expires.
To request an extension, you must:
- Provide a valid academic reason or medical justification for the delay.
- Submit a Program Extension Request Form (available from our office).
- Get confirmation from your academic advisor.
- Show updated financial support documents.
Extensions must be submitted at least 30 days before your program end date. Late requests may result in termination of your SEVIS record.
